A Brief History of the New Dean Foods Company

  • December 21, 2001: The "new" Dean Foods is born when Suiza Foods Corporation's acquisition of Dean Foods Company is complete. Suiza changes its name to Dean Foods Company and its "ticker symbol" on the NYSE changes from "SZA" to "DF." The company's headquarters are located in Dallas.
  • May 9, 2002: Dean Foods acquires Boulder, Colo.-based White Wave, Inc., maker of Silk®, the nation's leading refrigerated soymilk.
  • May 8, 2003: Dean announces realignment of organization to sharpen focus on strategic brands. Morningstar Foods transfers all manufacturing assets to Dean Dairy Group and changes name to Dean National Brand Group, which is focused exclusively on marketing and selling nationally branded products.
  • January 5, 2004: Dean Foods acquires Horizon Organic Dairy Corporation, maker of a full line of organic milk, dairy, egg and juice products.
  • August 4, 2004: Dean Foods announces plans to consolidate its branded businesses - White Wave, Horizon Organic and Dean National Brand Group - into one division, lead by White Wave President Steve Demos. The new company is later named White Wave Foods and the headquarters established in Broomfield, Colo.
  • January 27, 2005: Dean Foods announces plans to spin-off its Specialty Foods Group to Dean shareholders, creating an independent public company. The new company will be lead by former Keebler Foods CEO Sam Reed.
  • June 27, 2005: Dean Foods completes the spin-off of its Dean Specialty Foods Group, Mocha Mix®, Second Nature® and foodservice salad dressings businesses, creating TreeHouse Foods, Inc. (NYSE: THS), an independent, publicly traded company.
  • August 22, 2005: Dean Foods sells Marie's Dressings and Dean's Dips brands to Ventura Foods. The Marie's plant in Thornton, Ill. is included in the sale.
  • March 29, 2006: Standard and Poor's announces that Dean Foods will be added to the S&P 500 Index.
  • August 9, 2006: Dean Foods announces plans to sell Leche Celta, its dairy operations in Spain and Portugal.
A Brief History of the Former Dean Foods Company
  • 1925: Samuel E. Dean Sr. purchases the Pecatonica Marketing Company, an evaporated milk processing facility located in northwestern Illinois.
  • 1927: Company name changes to Dean Evaporated Milk Company. Additional Illinois dairy plants are purchased.
  • 1929: Company name changes to Dean Milk Company.
  • 1951: Dean opens its Franklin Park, Ill. general offices, which served as its corporate headquarters until December 2001.
  • 1961: Dean Milk Company completes its first public offering of common stock to 1,800 shareholders.
  • 1962: Dean's first non-dairy acquisition - Green Bay Foods, a pickle company.
  • 1963: Dean Milk Company changes its name to Dean Foods Company, reflecting the company's expansion into specialty foods.
  • 1981: After acquisitions of several dairies nationwide, Dean Foods is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "DF."
  • December 2001: Dean Foods Company is acquired by Suiza Foods Corporation.
A Brief History of Suiza Foods Corporation
  • 1988: Gregg L. Engles purchases Reddy Ice, a commercial ice business.
  • 1993: Recognizing the need for consolidation in the highly fragmented dairy industry, Engles makes his first dairy acquisition with the purchase of Suiza Dairy in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Additional dairy acquisitions follow.
  • 1995: Engles' Reddy Ice company merges with his dairy acquisitions to become Suiza Foods Corporation, based in Dallas.
  • 1996: Suiza Foods makes its first public offering of stock and is listed on the NASDAQ.
  • 1997: Suiza Foods makes its second public offering of stock in January, and in March moves to the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "SZA." Suiza Foods completes a merger with The Morningstar Group, Inc., greatly expanding Suiza's branded and value-added product line.
  • 1998: Suiza sells its packaged ice operations.
  • 2000: After more than 40 dairy acquisitions since 1996, Suiza Foods Corporation becomes the nation's largest dairy processor and distributor. The company operates 82 plants and has 18,000+ employees nationwide. Suiza enters the international market with the purchase of Leche Celta in Spain.
  • December 2001: Suiza Foods Corporation acquires Dean Foods Company and changes its name to Dean Foods.
